What is a fixed annuity?
A fixed annuity is an insurance contract that locks in a guaranteed interest rate for a set number of years. You hand the carrier a single premium, the carrier credits a fixed rate every year for the duration of the term, and at the end you can renew, annuitize, or take the money out. The rate is contractual: it does not fluctuate with markets, interest-rate moves, or carrier performance.
Compared with a CD, you get a longer locked-in rate (typically 3 to 10 years vs 1 to 5 for a CD) and the growth is tax-deferred until you withdraw. Compared with a fixed index annuity, you trade the chance at higher index-linked credits for an absolute guaranteed return: no caps, no participation rates, just a number you can plan around.
Fixed annuities work best when you want predictability: a known balance at a known date, with no exposure to market movement or interest-rate risk during the term.
The terms you'll see on every product page.
- Guaranteed rate
- The annual interest rate the carrier contractually credits to your account for the duration of the term. Locked in at issue, never changes mid-contract.
- MYGA
- Multi-Year Guaranteed Annuity. The common name for a fixed annuity that locks in one guaranteed interest rate for the full surrender period.
- AM Best rating
- An independent grade of an insurer's financial strength. A- or better is considered strong. We surface AM Best ratings on every product.
- Tax-deferred growth
- Interest earned inside the annuity is not taxed until you withdraw it, letting your balance compound without an annual tax drag.
- Premium
- The amount you pay the carrier to open the contract. Most fixed annuities accept a single lump-sum premium.

“I had no idea how a fixed annuity actually worked before. This walked me through it in plain English and made the trade-offs really easy to see.”
